PEDRO MACHADO
Everyone you speak to about Pedro Machado will tell you the same thing; he's wild, wide-open and totally wired 24 hours a day.
Pedro, born in Washington, D.C. in 1970 of Portuguese descent, first started dancing at the Cancun Cantina. It was the same old story - someone took him to the bar, he stood on the side finding the whole thing thoroughly amusing and the next thing he knew, he was hooked.
He began dancing wherever he could and his energetic and infectious style began getting noticed. As is always the story with anyone as dedicated as Pedro, the travelling to and from competitions started taking its toll. He went through a number of jobs to finance this new habit: a construction foreman, a car salesman and even the selection procedures for the fire brigade, as the shift work would give him the time he required for travelling.
Fate also tried to interfere with Pedro's career when he was sideswiped in a traffic accident by a drunken driver. He suffered severe internal injuries and was in hospital for some months, but even this could not put an end to his dancing and he bounced back with his own inimitable style.
His initial attempts at choreography were for competition teams, but this soon led to writing dances that reflected his own personal style and flair. His first dance, Kick N' Rock, is now an accepted world standard competition dance and was chosen by Jo Thompson for inclusion in her first American Line Dance book. Dances to follow this included, Woodchuck and Ri-Flex, are included in Volume 2 of Jo's Line Dance series. Co-coreography included King Of The Road with Jo Thompson, Cha Cha Loco with both Jo and Alan, and more recently, Mambo # 5 with Tony Lee.
Pedro's dedication began to pay off and the titles began to come, including 1997 U.C.W.D.C Showcase Champion, 1997 C.W.L.D.A International Grand Champion and 1997 European Champion. Pedro kept competing, and the titles kept coming. The realisation of his dream was when he become the first UCWDC Chicago Masters Champion and then in Sanantonio Texas in 1999 he became the UCWDC Male Super Stars Line Dance Champion.
